Open File – Security Warning

by

When running an executable file over the local network you may get the above warning. This often happens when you run a network application and that application is hosted on a server and not on your machine.

This is how to fix it;

Enable the “Include all network paths (UNC’s)” setting from Internet Options.

  1. Go to the Control Panel & click on Internet Options.
  2. Select the Security tab.
  3. Click Local Intranet.
  4. Click the Sites button.
  5. If need be, uncheck the Automatically Detect Intranet Network
  6. Check the Include all network paths (UNC’s) option.
  7. Click OK, all the way back and you should be done.

If you’re more security concerned and want to lock down even the local network addresses, you can also add the IP address of the server/machine you’re running the file from. In that case, you need to add the server’s address to your Trusted Sites list;

  1. Go to the Control Panel & click on Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security Tab.
  3. Click Trusted Sites.
  4. Click Sites button.
  5. Uncheck the Require server verification ( https: ) for all sites in this zone.
  6. Add the IP address of the Server.
  7. Click Close and OK out of the Internet settings.

That’s it.
