Stop different versions of Word from re-registering

by

When you have multiple copies of Word on your machine like 2003 & 2007,  it can be a pain as when you start one, it re-registers as the default and then proceeds to only open up doc and docx files in that version.

To bypass the auto-registration for Word 2007, follow these steps:

  • Exit Word.
  • Start Regedit.
  • Locate and then click to select the following registry subkey:
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options
  • After you select the subkey, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.
  • Type NoReReg, and then press ENTER.
  • Right-click NoReReg, and then click Modify.
  • In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  • On the File menu, click Exit to close Regedit.

If you do that for one of the versions (probably best to go for 2007) then it’ll stop re-registering and you can keep docx opening with 2007 and doc files opening with 2003.
