DFS/DFSR replication woes

March 10, 2010

Had a problem with two servers not replicating some files. It would be random as far as I could tell but once we had discovered it and ran the diagnostics in the DFS management tool it identified several files as having the temporary attribute set -or- that they were symbolic links.

We knew they weren’t symbolic links so I checked the attrib setting and it didn’t say anything about being temporary.

After a bit of research I found fsutil and ran that against the files – sure enough they had the temp attribute set. After a search I found a good page that broke it down for me and mentioned that I would need powershell installed on the server to clear the attributes on the files and then a permanent fix would be via Symantec Endpoint Protection being tweaked! It’s caused by SEP and Outlook. More specifically the Email AntiVirus component of SEP – the solution I hear you ask? Remove the Email AntiVirus component from SEP clients! Yay Symantec…

Powershell script is as follows;

Get-childitem C:\Your-Data -recurse | ForEach-Object -process {if (($_.attributes -band 0x100) -eq 0x100) {$_.attributes = ($_.attributes -band 0xFEFF)}}

Long story short go to this link;
