Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7

March 14, 2012

This had been frustrating me for a while before I focused my attention on it.

OK, so got a new machine, comes with IE 9, some website (still!) aren’t compatible with IE 9. So I need to roll back to IE 8.
You would think that it’s simple but apparently my head is too small to work this one out quickly so here is the fix;

UNINSTALL Internet Explorer 9!!!

OK for those who need guidance on this, follow these steps;

Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features > View Installed Updates… under the group that is called Microsoft Windows, look for an entry that is “Windows Internet Explorer 9“.
Click that, then click the uninstall button at the top. You may need to reboot but then you’ll have IE 8 back, safe and sound.

Don’t bother turning the Internet Explorer 9 “Feature” on or off – once you remove IE 9 that “Feature” will say Internet Explorer 8. In other words, this is just a way to turn on Internet Explorer, regardless of version.

Not sure why I couldn’t work this one out for a while but I put it down to the lack of caffeine.

Outlook 2010 Suggested Contact/NK2

March 13, 2012

Ok this is just stupid. I had to create a new profile for Outlook 2010. Copied over all the contacts INCLDUING “Suggestion contacts”, which is the NK2 of 2010 right? Welllll sorta…
So I go to send a new email and the auto-populate, just doesn’t.
I check the suggested contacts and sure it’s full with the migrated contacts from the old profile….huh?
So the trick is to open a new email, click on the To button (yes that button you haven’t used for many years) and then add all the suggested contacts to your To field.
Then just close the email, DON’T send it (otherwise you’ll be spamming your contact list with a blank email).
That’s all you need to do!
Again, Microsoft, I ask WHY?!?!

Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. A program error has occurred.

March 6, 2012

I got this problem all of a sudden with Outlook 2007.
No idea what was causing it.
I tried removing all add-ins (the obvious choice).
I then tried repairing the PST.
After that I tried creating a new profile and downloading all the email again.
Finally when nothing else worked I googled the problem and found an obscure reference to starting the Windows Search service.
The machine I was working on didn’t have it installed so I downloaded and install thinking it was a long shot but worth a try… to my amazement it worked and now no longer comes up with this error message when I start Outlook.
Go figure.
