Install OSX media to a flash disk or other device.

April 4, 2014

Had a friend of an old colleague drop his mac and damage the HD. I managed to recover most of the data using Spinrite but of course needed to get a new drive in there.

I downloaded Mavericks from the app store on my mac and then plugged in a spare drive and started down the road of installing mavericks on that drive. Well it then said, Oh yeah I’m going to reboot your mac and start installing Mavericks to that drive. My initial thought was, woa woa woa, hold on there. Why do you need to do that when it’s an external drive and I’m not going to take the risk it’s going to mess with my current drive on my machine!

So I found a command line that does it for you 🙂 Here’s the link I found – http://osxdaily.com/2013/10/23/create-os-x-mavericks-install-drive/

and here’s the script; (make sure you change /Volumes/untitled to the correct name of the drive you want to install to)

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia –volume /Volumes/untitled –applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app –nointeraction
