Can’t add Windows 2012 server to domain

September 26, 2014

Couldn’t add a 2012 server to a 2003 functional level domain…

I checked all the bits I could think of and everywhere it said that the functional level of the domain was 2003. Yet every time I tried to add the 2012 server it complained it was 2000.

The devil is in the details as it said the FORREST functional level and I just read that as DOMAIN level.

Anyway they are two separate things and you need BOTH to be raised to 2003 before you can add that 2012 server.

To raise the FORREST functional level;

  • Open up Active Directory Domains and Trusts.
  • Right click on the Active Directory Domains and Trusts just above your domain name.
  • Click on Raise FORREST functional Level.

Permissons error when moving VMWare Fusion Virtual Machine

September 8, 2014

I got this error today and forgot that often on Mac’s a file is not necessarily a file but it can be a folder. So when I added the new user to have full permissions those permissions didn’t filter through to the files inside that folder… (yes that’s pretty crap).

So what did I do?

  • I had to remove the extension (which is  .vmwarevm) and then it magially turned into a folder.
  • I made sure I had the right permissions and then clicked on the tiny gear icon and said push these same permissions to the folder’s contents.
  • Once that was done I renamed the folder by adding the .vmwarevm to the end of it and then ran it.

Worked like a charm.
