Network problems!

June 30, 2017

Had a weird issue where a computer had an IP, DNS was OK, could ping a URL btu could not get a web session nor email. No matter what we tried, everytihng looked OK but still no dice.

Turns out it was a corrupted registry key for TCP/IP! WTH? Anyway here is the fix;

Start –> In run type cmd –> Then “CMD” will be displayed –>
Now enter this command
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
Press “Enter”.
Reboot your computer

No pings allow for Windows Server 2016

June 29, 2017

Not really sure why this is like this out of the box but Microsoft has decided that even on a domain a new server sold not respond to ping requests.

There are plethora of tools out there that rely upon echo requests to make sure that devices are up and not in the throws of some failure.

The fix is obvious but just in case you’re not sure, search for Firewall or go to Control Panel and then Firewall.

To go Inbound.

Right Click File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request… ICMPv4 or v6) and choose Enable.

That’s it.

Outlook deleted my vCard Signature

June 5, 2017

This drove me crazy!

Outlook would literally delete my vCard files an other files I had in a signature I just created. You know that signame_files folder that goes with the signatures? Yep that folder would have it’s contents deleted except for an image file of the vCard. Not so helpful Microsoft…

You didn’t come here to chit chat so here’s the fix… or at least my work around!

  • Create the signature exactly the way you want it.
  • Add in any image files for text and the vCard.
  • Make sure that all your reply options are set.
  • Close Outlook.
  • Now open %appdata%/Microsoft/Signatures
  • Change the properties for all the .htm, .rtf & .txt files to ONLY allow READ access.
  • For this Right click > Properties > Security (tab) > Advanced > Disable Inheritance > Convert Inherited Permissions… > Double click on the user and remove all permissions except READ.
  • Save and repeat for the folder i.e. if your signature was called “my signature” then you should see a folder called “my signature_files”.
  • Now you can open Outlook and it should have your vCard signature all done.
